Anthony Caro
The Barbarians, Europa & The Bull and Paper
Book Sculptures
6 March - 17 April 2003
Barbarians Invade London Gallery! A group of six wild
horsemen brandishing spears, bows and whips accompany a lonely figure
on a chariot pulled by an ox. Together they comprise The Barbarians -
the latest sculpture installation by Sir Anthony Caro, internationally
renown as one of the greatest modernist sculptors of our time. On a closer
look we see that the warriors are riding horses made from ' vaulting horses'
more familiar in a gymnasium than in a sculpture context. They are charging
at us and we are quickly enveloped by their fierce energy. We are left
wondering whether their roots are mythological or a haunting reminder
of the present.
The Barbarians, shown at the Mitchell-Innes
& Nash Gallery, New York last autumn, are made from a combination of stoneware,
wood and steel - a medium that Caro also used with his famous Last Judgement
installation sculpture, which has been compared to Picasso's Guernica,
first seen at the 1999 Venice Biennale and most recently as part of his
exhibition in Barcelona at Gaudi's La Pedrera building.
Caro, exploring narrative sculpture,
has also just completed Europa and the Bull. Based on the myth that culminates
in the rape of Europa by the god Zeus disguised as a bull - it is a story
artists have been depicting since at least 560 BC. In Caro's sculpture
a large imploded rusted steel cylinder forms the body of the bull upon
which the small fragile form of Europa is precariously seated - the massive
power of the rusted steel body augments the vulnerability of Europa perfectly.
This work is for sale only in it's entirety. Please click
on the images to the left to see some of the individual sculptures that
make up the 'Barbarians'.
Unlike other sculptors Anthony Caro
has not chosen to limit his work to one clearly identifiable path. In
contrast with the above, a group of impressive new Paper Book Sculptures
are also displayed. They are not only vastly different in scale and material
from the former but also their content is entirely abstract. As with most
of the best of Caro's small sculpture series, the paper books are imbued
with a sense of fun and delight. They demonstrate the richness, variety
and inventiveness of a sculptor at his virtuoso best. You will find images
of these paper works further down this page.
There will be a major retrospective of Anthony Caro's
work at Tate Britain in autumn 2004.
A fuuly illustrated 64 page catalogue of the Barbarians and 36 page catalogue
of Europa & the Bull and Paper Book Sculptures are available. Please
