Anthony Hill British, 1930-2020
Study for Relief Construction, 1956-1982
copper, perspex and aluminium
60 x 61 cm
A second version of the theme of Relief Construction December 1956, 1956, (Hayward cat. no. 41.i, p. 35 (ill.), now in the Tate collection. The title of the present work suggests it may have been planned before the Tate work. There are several differences between the works: the dimensions are double those of the Tate relief, and the material distribution on the two planes is inverted – the base plane is copper here, with clear perspex mounted above it and the aluminium elements above the perspex, while in the Tate version the base plane is clear perspex with a square of copper mounted on top. In the Tate version there is also a spacing element between the base plane and the copper square; in the present work the two planes are flush mounted.
This overall design of the relief exhibits bilateral symmetry, and was the first Hill work with this symmetric feature. Hill also believed that it was the first symmetric work in the Tate collection.
