Anthony Hill British, 1930-2020
Composition (Constructional Relief C), 1956
paint and cobex on plywood
28.6 x 55.9 cm
As Hill moved from the final four paintings of 1955–6 to the constructed relief he made four studies of the surface and light reflecting properties of various paints and plastics. Two of these studies survive, Constructional Relief B, 1956 and Constructional Relief C, 1956. In the catalogue to the Hayward Gallery retrospective these are titled Relief Construction and Composition respectively; however one of Hill's contemporary notebooks [AHN1955–6 Dec–May (Greek Street)] describes them as Constructional Relief B and C. Both were photographed in the Greek Street studio by Adrian Flowers in 1956 along with Constructional Relief D, which was later destroyed.
