Leon Kossoff British, 1926-2019
Extract from Catalogue raisonné, p, 288
Kossoff’s father was eighty-five at the date of this portrait, and had recently retired. ‘It [sitting] gave him something to do,’ Kossoff suggested (in conversation with the cataloguer, 2014), and a series of twelve extant portraits emerge in quick succession: his father seated in an armchair; his father asleep; his father seated half-length; his father’s head; and his father’s hands.
