Unlike Gabo's well-documented works in plastic and metal, which were additive constructions, this work is a 'subtractive' piece, where Gabo carved directly into the stone. Gabo made these stone carvings only occasionally but throughout his working life, demonstrating a surprising continuity of commitment to traditional sculpting. In 1996, The Henry Moore Foundation brought together 16 examples of these carvings from the collections of the artist's family and the Tate Gallery. They range widely in scale, from hand-held works to large totemic pieces, but are unified by their sinuous lines and organic quality, which belies the constructivist renown of their maker, who is celebrated more for his mathematical working and synthetic materials.
