This group of photo portraits of Vladimir Mayakovsky by Aleksandr Rodchenko mark the creative friendship and intimacy of two of the most prominent figures of the Russian avant-garde. The portraits were taken in April 1924 by Rodchenko at his studio in Ul. Myasnitskaya, Moscow upon Mayakovsky’s request.
The photos were a present in 1960 of the artist's daughter Varvara Rodchenko to the art historian Camilla Gray, who in turn gave the photos in 1971 to Lutz Becker to mark their curatorial collaboration on the exhibition ‘Art in Revolution’ at the Hayward Gallery, London, in the same year. A letter of authentication by Rodchenko’s grandson and heir Aleksandr Lavrentiev dated Mocow, October 21, 2016, is available.
