Leon Kossoff British, 1926-2019
Andrea Rose, “Leon Kossoff, Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings” Published by Modern Art Press, London, 2021, Page 456 Illustrated in colour, Catalogue Raisonné No.383. Andrea Rose in Catalogue Raisonné Notes:
"This is the first in a quartet of works (see also cats 384–386), all painted in 1991, showing the road bridge over the railway
tracks at Walm Lane, north-west London, with the white stone facade of Willesden Green Station beyond. Kossoff
recalled walking to the road bridge on Lydford Road, the viewpoint, which was only a few minutes away from
his Willesden Green studio accompanied by his four grandchildren, Alexander, Aaron, Natasha and Abigail, who
would hang over the parapet and hail the trains as they sped towards the tunnels.
In this gusty painting of early spring, four railway workers in orange high-visibility jackets stand back from
the tracks as trains thunder past. A steep embankment curves upwards to the right, its green slopes rising to a screen of
trees, which, in turn, climb towards a turbulent sky."
