László Moholy-Nagy Hungarian American, 1895-1946
Between 1919 and 1925, László Moholy-Nagy produced a number of important Constructivist prints. These works, with their intersecting planes and suspended geometric forms, closely relate to his abstract paintings and to his innovative kinetic construction, Light-Space Modulator. In the present composition, subtle tonal shifts across overlapping bands and semicircular forms evoke a sense of transparency, spatial depth and movement.
A closely related, though not identical, lithograph appears in Moholy-Nagy’s Kestnermappe 6, with an example held in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
While many of Moholy-Nagy’s prints were issued in editions of 50, this particular edition was never completed, and the exact number produced remains unknown. This impression is presumed to be an artist's proof and remained in the collection of the artist’s daughter, Hattula Moholy-Nagy, until her death in 2024.
