Made in 1963–64, Relief Construction C1 (Maquette) is a study for the first work in Hill’s series of reliefs on the ‘Partitions’ theme. This work uses the 120° aluminium extrusions that had entered Hill’s oeuvre in 1962 and would inform many works throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The work is small and evidently studio-made, with the edges of the aluminium units retaining the burr of cutting and a freedom in the positioning of some elements.
Titles of the ‘Partitions’ theme (concerned with an aspect of number theory) reliefs were given the prefix ‘C’.
