Annely Juda Fine Art is pleased to announce Yuko Shiraishi's participation in What is Now, a major group exhibition marking the 30th anniversary of Raketenstation Hombroich, part of Stiftung Insel Hombroich near Neuss, Germany
Yuko Shiraishi's new work 'Songlines' at the Rocket Station in Stiftung Insel Hombroich was inspired by the Australian aboriginal cultural practice of walking invisible routes through singing – introduced to her by Bruce Chatwin's novel 'The Songlines'. Using fifty-metre long tunnel, it recalls the ancient feeling of tunnels in myths like Ancient Greece's 'Orpheus' and the Japanese myth of Izanagi's journey to Yomi-no-Kuni. The Songlines are visualised with painted LED lights, alongside Katsuhito Nishikawa's 'Rodiolona' and work by Tadashi Kawamata soon to come.
Field Institute Hombroich
In 2000, Karl-Heinrich Müller proposed Katsuhito Nishikawa to realise an experimental art project at the rocket station. Nishikawa contacted Yuko Shiraishi in London and Tadashi Kawamata in Paris. The three of them founded the Field Institute Hombroich / FIH to create space for artists at the rocket station. By selling their works, they collected 20,000 euros and thus financed the renovation of the building that today houses the Café Biemel. There they started an artist residency program. This program is continued by the foundation in a modified form and now at a different location within the rocket station, to this day. The group of artists from the FIH also placed four sea containers on the site of the rocket station in a line to a long, narrow space for art exhibitions and performances. This installation also bears the name Field Institute Hombroich. When the containers began to rust significantly after about five years, Nishikawa decided, after consultation with Müller in 2005, to connect them and guide them through one of the rocket station's earth walls like a tunnel. The plants that grew soon after protected the tunnel from weather influences. Container and overgrown wall form a harmonious unit. The three artists are now reunited in the FIH and are breathing new life into the room with enthusiasm.
