Röda Sten Konsthall’s summer exhibition features a trio of artists, Astrid Göransson, Sigrid Holmwood and Unni Britta Kangas. All three artists are inspired by countryside life, and their work weaves together personal family histories with class and identity issues.
The title of the exhibition is borrowed from one of the most famous works in art history – The Potato Eaters by Vincent Van Gogh. The painting portrays a group of people gathered around a table, expressing a warmth that belies their rough features, and viewing their fate with empathy. References to the painting and to the artists in the exhibition are not direct and instead follow an intuitive line of thought.
Astrid Göransson, Sigrid Holmwood and Unni Britta Kangas are exquisite storytellers who draw material from their own experiences, as well as from the histories of family members, neighbors and entire communities. They do not shy away from fabulation and exaggeration, which they perform with precision and the ability to, at one and the same time, see the big picture and uncover hidden details.
