Composition No. 98 is unusual within Vordemberge-Gildewart's work, for its fully developed grid structure and striking symmetry. He first introduced a background grid to Composition No. 37 (1927, now in the collection of MoMA, New York), followed by Composition No. 53 (now destroyed), Composition No. 66 (Museum Wiesbaden, sold by Annely Juda Fine Art) and Composition No. 75 (Galerie Berinson, Berlin). The grid reaches its most resolved and rigorously symmetrical form in this painting, Composition No. 98.
