American Beauty

23 May - 13 July 2002

American Beauty is an exhibition that focuses on the work of twelve of the most important American artists associated with minimalism and pure abstraction.

22 major works have been selected that span nearly 40 years by the following artists:

Carl André – Dan Flavin – Donald Judd – Ellsworth Kelly – Sol LeWitt – Robert Mangold – Agnes Martin – Isamu Noguchi – Robert Ryman – Richard Serra – Joel Shapiro – Tony Smith.

These artists have been fundamental to both American art and indeed contemporary abstract art throughout the world. Again and again one sees their influence. Often these artists are mentioned for their minimalism, discipline and aesthetics but far too rarely for their sheer beauty, hence the exhibition’s title American Beauty.
