Anna Mayerson: Paintings

16 February - 11 March 1972

Anna Mayerson has always retained two important elements in her work -- content and colour. This makes her paintings concise and simple. Her colour recalls the Mediterranean -- glowing and vibrant, although she no longer lives under the Sicilian sun.

The subject of each painting is reduced to a few elements serving as symbols and the title adds precision to this symbolism. The essence is conveyed as in a poem, where just a few verses give the imagery and its complete poetical meaning.

There is, no doubt, a naive side to Anna Mayerson's work, but this should not be misunderstood, as with, for instance, Chagall. A fleeting moment of detachment and contemplation can evoke many unexpressed thoughts, shaping them into form and colour.

She is an artist of intuition, and in a few evocative strokes she gives each of her canvasses strength, yet infinite tenderness.
